#4: How I lost 45 kg, from the very beginning...

I've been wanting to write about my weight loss journey
for a very long time
but wasn't sure where? or how?
or if anyone would actually be interested at all..

But since I finally created a blog at last,
let's not procrastinate anymore(:
this may be a long post and i may cry as i type
but here it goes
.
.
Lil Me
Well, i've been overweight or 'chubby'
if you put it in a nice way...all my life.

I don't have fond memories of primary school.
I still remember clearly the first day of it...

we sat around a square table and was given some work to do
one of the girls at the table was sharing her colour pencils with everyone,
except me
"ew i don't wanna lend her, girls dont talk to her"

just like that, i was outcast by the rest

honestly, i hold no grudges against that girl
we were all once young and ignorant

throughout primary school, people always made fun at my name..
my chinese name is Yuan Xiao Nan. 袁晓楠
and if you're chinese, you'll probably understand why..
its pronunciation literally translates into "Round Small Boy"

so yeah. i was fat. and had short hair. so yeah.

after PSLE, i visited my relatives overseas.
as a 'treat' for completion of primary school.
I love my relatives, really. and I know they feel the same too.
it's just that sometimes older aunties tend to be a little...over-chit-chatty...

I overheard them on the phone,
"aiyooo, they must have spoil her real bad. she looks so fat and ugly now"
 I cried.

I was a 12yo girl, without my parents,
in a foreign country where I'll have to stay at for another month,
with people whom I thought I could rely on, & love me for who I am no matter.
it was terrible.

2009 - Secondary School
Secondary school was the total opposite.
It was definitely a period that I hope will never end.
Fooled around, joked and laughed every single day.
Though teachers must have hated me, I was a terrible student. HAHA.

 Most importantly,
I gained true friends whom loved me for me
& will be stuck with me for LIFE!!
-evil laughter-

April 2010 -  First few days of Poly.
Gained ALOT of weight during the O levels period.
Entering Poly was a nightmare for me, being in all-girls schools the entire life before.
Boys were a species that I never had contact with EVER.
I swear I didn't have a single guy contact in my phone nor in my fb friends list
I was afraid of them
What if they decide to outcast me as well?

Thankfully, Boys turned out to be a wonderful bunch
I hanged out with a huge group of 'brothers'
they are damn hilarious i swear

I'm always the 'joker' among my girlfriends
but with the guys, I can finally rest my mouth and pass this role onto them (:

though the people's great. the school's great. life's great. and all.
I admired how girls could doll up and wear pretty clothes to school...
I wanted to be like them.

for the entire first term of poly,
all I wore was a polo and berms. every single day.
Had 6 Hang Ten polos, same design, different colours,
3 black. 1 red. 1 dark blue. 1 purple.
and 3 pairs of berms.

also, I had my first crush here.
He was witty, slim-built and light.
I felt that I wasn't good enough to like him.

A close friend of mine once said,
"if you can lose weight, pigs can fly"

I had the mindset of just staying like this my whole life...
be a tomboy...be single...not get a boyfriend...
I lied to myself that I didn't care.

One morning, I weighed myself.
 99.7 kg
Something inside me ticked.
I can't carry on like this. I must change. For me.

Determined. Motivated. Driven.
I wanted to be healthy, to feel beautiful, be confident
do stuff and fulfill dreams that I never thought I'll be able to do.

So on the 12th of July 2010,
I started my weight loss journey..

Photo of me taken every month. July 2010-Oct 2011. 40kg lighter.

totally changed my diet.
refrained from the "bad stuff" and exercised.
I would google nutrition facts & read through food blogs when I'm hungry
Imagine that I'm eating them & that would've been enough.

I weighed myself everyday. and the weight loss was drastic.
I would lose about 2.5kg/week.

for the first 3 months.
I lost a remarkable 30kg...
But I was so caught up in losing weight, I neglected my health.

"wah you lost so much weight! how did you do it? you must feel really good now."

yeah I was proud of myself.
but I became moody, weak and pale.
no longer the humorous out-going girl that I used to be.
That's not all...

I lost a lot of hair.
Each time I run my fingers through, 10 strands would fall out.
it was crazy.

I was depressed.
My hair was my crowning glory.
Something girls cannot live without.
It was the asset that I was most proud of when I was fat.

I refuse to crumble to this self-harm I'm committing unconsciously.
I tuned my diet.
added in food groups and was less harsh on myself.

My mood improved and I started to have energy again.
Though I might have lost a lot of weight,
the confidence that I thought I would have gained was still not there.

I did not have the courage to wear sleeveless tops or shorts.
And would always feel as if people are still judging me as 'fat'

All I wore was still shirts, jackets, jeans.
And I still stuck with straight rebonded hair.

NOT GOOD.

This was not what I started my journey for!!
I wanted to feel beautiful! To wear pretty clothes!

December 2011 - My hair loss was less drastic.
I wanted to reward myself.
I permed my hair.

My new curls gave me life.

I gained confidence.
I tried make-up.
I put down my specs and had contacts for the first time.
I feel beautiful.
(:

December 2011- Present Me
Till today, I'm still cautious about what I eat.
Still a little over-paranoid.
Still counting my calories.

But at least I'm happy.

I'm back to the girl I was.
The girl who would laugh and joke around.

And at the same time, now 45kg lighter
I became a brand new person.
I gained confidence,
& new dreams to achieve and work hard to.

I even joined a certain modelling competition which I talked about in my 'Profile'
and will probably do a post about it soon :)

So to the girls and boys out there.
Believe that it's possible.

my secret to success: Self-Discipline

It may be difficult at first, especially for food-lovers like me.
there may be sacrifices,
people who pull you down & don't understand what you're going through

"just eat la, see i eat so much still so skinny"

but remember, you're doing it for a better you.
and there'll be many supporting you along the way,
including me

Life will definitely become more exciting.
more opportunities will open. more adventures to venture.

This is a lifestyle change, a turning phase
trust me, it WILL get easier!!!

.
.
.
Lastly, I would like to dedicate this post to my family and friends
who gave me tremendous support throughout this journey.

you guys give meaning to the person i am today.
thank you.

L.O.L,
Kylie

p.s. my first crush eventually got a girlfriend. she's a really sweet girl!
& I'm genuinely happy for him, really am. hahaha. like I said, this is a change for a better you!^^

  11. Hi Kylie!
Awesome Post! I have a very important question. I've also lost more than half my weight but it took me 6 years till now. Very happy with the number i see on the weighing scale but depressed with how I look. I have so much flabbiness and 'excess skin' and also lots of stretch marks everywhere…it's horrendous. I do a lot of running but it's totally not helping, it only made my calves 'chunkier'. :( Please help….

ps: I've just realized that you're that Model! Haha… <<<<--- Meet that annoying photographer that have been taking pics all over the stage area. Muahahaha

    ReplyDelete

    1. hahaha hello diana! ^^ dont worry too much about the flabbiness okay! drink lots of water and increase intake of Vitamins A,C,E etc. either through natural foods(preferable) or supplements!

We are still young so our skin elasticity is much better. it just takes a long time though. i have tons of stretch marks as well! and big muscular legs which i think developed due to our heavy weight in the past.

most importantly you're so much healthier now! so just stay positive and embrace your flaws! i still wear sleeveless all the time despite the stretchmarks and butterfly arms. hahaha. :)

  12. Congrats! The next thing you can consider is to pick up other sports. Being healthy does not just mean being skinny, but also being able to move your body well across all degrees of movement. I would recommend CrossFit as a starting point of your search. Also, try Mark's Daily Apple blog, it has really good ideas. It will be another fun journey, I promise you! Have fun!

    1. hello peishan! sorry i'm gonna copy and paste what i just commented to someone else below. hope you dont mind ^^

I EAT TONS OF VEG AND FRUITS throughout the day.
i have oatmeal and home-blended soymilk for breakfast.
and i love my oily fish like salmon and other lean proteins!
like chicken breast, lean beef/pork/fish, tofu etc.

my appetite is actually quite huge. I SWEAR.
but i've only been eating natural whole foods meaning that they are not man-made. like junk, refined, sweet drinks etc.
and I haven't had any problems with my weight since!

it may be hard at first to change your diet habits but you will soon grow to love and crave healthier foods^^

I WILL DO A POST ON HOW TO LOSE WEIGHT SOON. once im done with all my school projects on hand. :)

    2. Hi Kylie!! Thanks for sharing! Could you make a post showing what you eat in a day? And your favorite recipes? I don't know how to make chicken breast and salmon taste good without pan frying, which I think is pretty unhealthy!

    1. oh dear gain weight? i've read up on it sometimes.
you can try fish oils, olive oil, nuts, oily fishes, potatoes

gaining weight takes time just like losing weight
0.5 kg = 3500cals excess of your everyday allowance.

i've friends who were skinny but they increased their intake of ALL KINDS OF FOOD. carbs protein fats and do alot of weight training at the same time. they did become muscular after awhile. but it really takes time!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. hi there! nope i didnt use any special products or anything. i just started to add back protein into my diet because my hair loss was due to the lack of protein previously which caused the body to stop providing protein to the less impt areas such as hair/nail growth in order to conserve them for more impt stuff like muscles and organs. :)

  25. Hey Kylie, I am sooooo amazed and motivated by your weight loss success story! Makes me want to get down to diet as soon as possible.

However, I'm at quite a loss about dieting since there is so much information online and everyone seems to have different opinions about dieting. Can I ask you a few questions? (I currently stand at 1.6m and 65kg and am aiming to lose 15 kg first)

    1. I'm already experience mild hair loss so should I go for a diet (albeit a healthy one, of course) despite this?

    2. Since I do not have good stamina, I'm planning to do HIIT daily as an alternative. Have you tried it before and does it work?

    3. I'm planning to have sandwiches (with ham, cheese, tuna etc)/oatmeal, fruit/vegetable salad/fish eg salmon for lunch and more fruits and vegetables for dinner. Is this advisable?

Sorry for asking so many questions. Hope you have a nice day! :)

    1. hello! thanks for the sweet comments :D

      1. you should consult a doctor regarding your hair loss! :0 but sometimes it may be just cyclical hair loss because a hair follicle has an average lifespan of 3 years so there will be a period where you will experience a signicant amount of hair falling out. but of course eating healthy is good for hair growth!! eat lots of good protein, vitamins :)

      2. i did lots of jogging when i was trying to lose weight. I dont know if it will be good to do HIIT daily, maybe every 2-3 days instead? because your muscles need time to regenerate!

3.your eating plan looks good as long as it doesnt exceed or fall too low (<1500 calories) below your calorie needs. hmm have more natural whole foods! foods that is provided by nature (incl. meat!) and avoid man-made processed like refined, junk food. because we are not made to eat stuff like that.

hope i managed to help a little! i'll do up a post on weight loss tips soon once i have more time on my hands! really busy with school now. ^^

    2. HIIT works as the muscle you gained will help to burn fat even at rest. ate about 1500-2000 calories, followed HIIT youtube exercises which I do everyday (do the beginner modifications e.g. rest on knees instead of a full plank), lost about 6 kg in 4 mths cos my diet was not consistent! I am 25 yrs old btw, metabolic rate slower than u guys.....Main difficulty lies in eating out..food portioning is larger when u eatout!

      Dear Kylie,
How to eat healthy at restaurants or when you eat out? portion size tends to be larger. they usually add alot of salt. Foodcourt is easier cos theeres always yong tau fu, cai fan, but what if u go to restaurants and eat stuff other than salads? fries, chicken wings, ribs, salmon fish but usually portion size too big and nt good to waste fd right?

  39. Hi Kylie! My name is Kayley, and on the 14th of June, I remember you walking in to Hot fm 91.3 radio station. And I was like, she. is.drop.dead.gorgeous. I had a little segment on the radio that morning, and after that, I remembered your name and googled it as soon as I got home, bringing me to this superb blog of yours. I read about your weight loss journey, and felt an immediate sense of nostalgia. I studied in an international school overseas, and weighed about 70 kilograms. My weight, the numbers on the scale determined how I lived my life, which i wouldn't even consider it "living" because I was never happy with it. And a few years down the road, I became anorexic, and that was when my involved solely myself and I, from a girl who LOVED food, to a girl who practiced discipline to the extent that I'd lie about eating, and made sure I did not consume more than 200 calories a day. Not only did I lose my social life, the closure with my family, I also lost many strands of hair everyday, which frightened me. I became paranoid and didn't want to touch my hair, because strands of my hair blew away with the wind. I was weak and pale, and stood at 35 kilograms. I am completely okay right now, I am at a healthy weight, and very much like you practice self discipline, am overly conscious with what I put in my mouth.

after I stumbled across your blog, even though I don't know you, I feel as though you are such a genuine, self-determined person, that persevere through the hardship, a journey that is very familiar to me. I would like to say that not only are you an amazing inspiration to young girls, but an inspiration to people who seek happiness, trying to reach for their goals, while staying anchored on the ground, staying grounded. I am so glad that I didnt experience this journey alone, and I have you to experience it with. You are such an amazing person<3 thank you

I'm truly thankful for your email, I swear I wept a few tears as I finish reading your email.
It's really comforting to know that a little post I decided to write is able to create an impact on someone else's life.
And really thank you for all your sweet compliments! You too must be a very determined person, has struggled and managed to come out of the little hole we dragged ourselves into.
Weight is a personal problem and is honestly, up to the individual to do anything about it.
And healthy living is not just about eating healthily but also a healthy body image. Haha sorry I'm not nagging, I know you're one who will understand all these too well by now! ^^

Were you the only girl in the room with the group of DJs? :)

Lots of Love, take care and stay healthy!

  43. Hi Kylie, I'd first just like to say that you're seriously an amazing inspiration.
I'm 15 and just like you used to be I'm currently battling with weight problems. Most people would say I just a look a little chubby but not the point of overweight cos I am still considered as an average weight girl but I honestly dont like the way my body looks. I used to be uber thin (probably underweight though I didnt actually check) especially in 2010 and always felt weak and pale like you were cos I transferred schools and was bullied alot probably cos I was a really shy and introverted girl that people enjoyed taking advantage of so um yeah..
    I'm actually a singaporean but last yr I moved overseas with my family... and I guess that's where the kilos just started gaining and gaining. I live in a western country now where chocolate is just everywhere and dirt cheap and all the snacks are so full of sugar. I started gaining when I got depressed because I felt like I didnt fit in at school with all the cultural differences and became homesick and missed my family back in sg. This might sound light but since I'm really really short for my age (I'm only about 151cm)being 47kg right now really makes me depressed. I've been thin all my life without having to count my calories but since I migrated maybe cos of the climate since we dont sweat that much here and cos of the high calorie foods I've been eating its just been really hard. I dont live in a really safe place so most of the time I just stay at home even on weekends unless I'm going to school. Yeah, I dont really have much of a social life either:/ I even have and a really chubby face now, jiggly arms I never ever thought of possibly having as well as fat thighs and it makes me really sad. Since last yr, I've been addicted to food and I always struggle to not put something in my mouth every 15 mintues when I'm at home. I'm not even exaggerating. My parents and brothers have been critisising me about my food addiction cos I'm always in the kitchen and recently when we skyped our relatives in Singapore one of my aunts/uncles called me fat which caused me to be really depressed. I hate the way I am and I've tried dieting and exercises but they always end up in failure. I feel like going out and jogging sometimes cos I feel so trapped here but since this isn't like Singapore where everywhere is pretty much safe the only choice I have is to exercise at home. Please help? ^^;
PS I've also been having hair loss problems since I entered secondary school. My hair used to be really thick but its been thinning out and it really makes me worried. What foods do you recommend to eat? I read that you should eat foods high in protein but I'm only 15 so I really have to just eat whatever my parents buy:/ Plus I can't really afford getting stuff like salmon or chicken breast for myself even if my mum and dad allowed me to. What should I take then?

I'm definitely in urgent help to lose weight..I'm very motivated to lose my weight..You're my inspiration..I've never had bullying problems..Very happy & bubbly..I'm 13, 1.6m & 90kg..so as many people might call it, I'm morbidly obese. I play soccer & my CCA is sports..I'm very hyper, always on my feet..I drink green tea 3 times a day, cut A LOT of sugars & fizzy drinks...I have a phobia of food but i'm still obese..I have a flatter stomach than most 90kg people do but my thighs, calves & arms are huge..Please help? Im really desperate

  49. Hello Kylie, I am really glad about your healthier and happier life. I hope to achieve success like you someday too :) Your past description of yourself is exactly what describes me now – about wearing the same tomboyish clothes everyday. I have always wished to be able to wear nice clothes and look nice in them...but I really lacked the confidence to do so because of my figure. Thank you for sharing your story :) I will work hard and keep you updated if you are interested to know my progress!

Is there any faster way to lose weight in a short period of time?

  54. Kylie,

Amazing. I can't do more than echo what these guys before me have said. Thanks for leading by example and showing people out there that there IS a way, which is not only great for building self-esteem through looking better but in a HEALTHY manner too.

Just a note to everyone out there; everyone is made different. When you adopt a lifestyle that incorporates healthy moving and eating, it does not necessarily mean you will automatically achieve a BMI of 20 or whatever that magic number is. There is no magic number. That's the thing, we're made different. But the -guarantee- is you will feel like a million bucks energy-wise, health will probably improve significantly as well and there is a pretty high chance you will look better physically too.

Where your body comfortably sits in terms of fat and weight when you do this is NOT guaranteed, and end of the day we need to be happy with what we were given. We can't change the past but can affect the future with what we decide and act on NOW.

    Be brave!

  58. Hi Kylie,
Congrats on your great journey! You're really an inspiration to us! :) do you mind to share besides jog, what other exercise did you do? Eating healthy and jog may help to lose some weight but how do you take away those flabby skin on the arms/tummy/thighs.. :'(

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. the flab will definitely get better with time! in the mean time just keep a positive attitude as you adjust to your new body and learn to love it no matter what. I have my own problems with stretchmarks and flab as well but I learnt to embrace them and treat them as battle scars from a victorious war. strength exercises help too with the building of muscles to tone and help out the flab issue :)

what we decide to eat is a choice! there's always convenient food that are healthy if we put in a little extra effort.
oatmeal, canned tuna (in water), fruits etc. at food courts just opt for healthier choices! soup-based, veg-based etc. don't be swayed by the tempting alternatives. hang in there, take care :)

  62. Reading your post inspires me to return back to my regime of losing weight again! I was 110kg in Jun13 last year, and lost 25kg in 3.5mths, bringing myself down to 85kg. However, i got lazy and is still tempted by food, and decided to try testing my limits which is a great mistake because I find it so hard to get back to my exercise and food control regime.
After reading your post, I am once again inspired to hit back on my regime! Totally understand that it is not an easy thing to lose so much weight, as I was once going through the same thing before. You're such an inspiration!

I was also considered "skinny" and only started to bulk up and gained weight since the past 8 months.
The irony that girls want to lose weight and guys want to grow heavier and bigger.

You are what you eat. I strongly believe that as long as u eat healthy, you will remain the way you are. forget the calories count thing, it makes your life miserable. if you can grow to like healthy food, no matter how much you eat, you can never be fat.

    hahaha you are beautiful.

  74. During my teenage days i also decided to lose weight when it hits 99kg.. almost to the 3 digit mark. I guess its the thoughts of crossing the 100mark that spurs overweight people to lose weight. Till end of army i successfully hit my target weight of 72kg. hahaha.. that was all history now..

  80. Though i am not a blogger, you have written something really close to my life that i am sure that it will inspire people. You understand how it feels like to be fat pretty much your whole childhood like me and you made a change to be healthy and fit which many people are just lazy to do. I have been fat for all my life until i made a change on Dec '2012.

Though i am a little paranoid like you as well now, and i very rarely touch unhealthy food which my mom feels i am over-extreme even when i am not XD i guess you can call that a good side effect but i try to not be on the extreme because it's okay to enjoy it 1 time per 1 month. But you can say the way girls train is quite different from guys because guys also need to bulk up with muscles and burning the fats at the same time.

So that's why i spend my time a lot in the Gym after school and the secret to my motivation is: "FRIENDS". That's why having the right company of friends is very important.

I never thought being fat is something terrible and fat people are often cute and nice :) but in fact, the society's POVs sometimes make people depressing...
My friend was also like you. She keeps thinking that she is overweight and so the guy she likes doesn't have any feeling for her. But I always tell her you are awesome and if that guy doesn't like you, you two are just not for each other and not that you are not good enough for him.

  95. Read your post and I'm so inspired! Im 18 years old, was obese all my life too. Throughout my primary, secondary school life I was teased a lot too. I wasn't outcasted but had many embarrassing moments because of those childish guys who made mean jokes.

Many times I told myself I want to lose the weight,
But my determination isn't helping myself.. I just could not stop eating unhealthy food and controlling my portion.
I'm currently at 110kg (really heavy, I know)
And I am really really afraid of loose skin issues.
I know health is the most important but I am only 18, I too want to look pretty and normal like other girls.

    Just telling my story :)

  122. Hi!
I'm 45 and am carrying around 20kg of excess weight since the kids came along. The extra weight is doing terrible things to my health, not to mention I look frumpy and super aunty. So I decided to start walking two weeks ago. I also cut down on the snacking in the office. I feel better maybe because I stop shoving chips, coke into my system. But it is very hard because there is so much temptation and naysayers. I stumbled on your blog post this morning, and it is inspiring. So I must now persevere and try harder. Thanks for sharing your story.

  123. Don't subject yourself to rules that are way too rigid when making an attempt to lose weight. While you need to be self-disciplined to have results, many people are so strict on themselves that they wind up disliking these new changes and quit the diet and exercise plan completely. Visit BestMetabolismBoosters.com for more tips on trimming down. Indeed, eating sugary snacks constantly won't help you lose fat however having sugar is still fine especially if you want it. Don't pig out and you ought to end up being fine with some sweets while on a diet.
